Wanda Laura Throckmorton was born February 8, 1923, the daughter of Clarence and Edna Kreft Garnatz. She passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013, at the Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa, at the age of 90.

Wanda was born in Auburn, Iowa. She grew up in Carroll County and after high school attended the State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years, later finishing her Bachelor's Degree at Drake University in the early 1960s. She was united in marriage to John Throckmorton, traveling to various locations while he served during World War II. The couple then returned to Carroll and Wanda began what would become a 37 year teaching career - starting in a rural one-room school, and then with the Glidden and Carroll Community Schools. In 1968 Wanda and John moved to Charter Oak. John passed away in 1971 and Wanda continued teaching in the Carroll Community School until she retired in1985. She loved children and you could see the joy in her face any time a child would enter the room.

Wanda enjoyed the outdoors, especially her flower gardening and watching the many birds that she kept well fed around her home. She also loved camping with her Royal Rover family and all types of travel, including an annual Branson visit. She enjoyed listening to music and was always ready for a good game of cards. Wanda was active in supporting local politics and was a contributing member of many community and social groups, including the American Association of University Women, a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; and one brother, Neil Garnatz. Survivors include one son, Tom Throckmorton and his wife, Denise of Des Moines, Iowa; one granddaughter, Tonya Throckmorton and one great-grandson, Damon White; both of Waukee, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
