Henrietta Schulz

Henrietta Louise Elsie (Thies) Schulz, daughter of Carl and Alvena Kuhlmann Thies was born on the family farm, two miles north of Charter Oak, Iowa, on November 30, 1909. She passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Autumn Point Assisted Living in Ft. Calhoun, Nebraska, at the age of 103.
Henrietta was baptized December 26, 1909, and confirmed April 13, 1924, at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak by Pastor A. Amstein. She received her education at St. John Lutheran School in Charter Oak. After graduating from eighth grade, she remained at home to help her parents. She also worked as a hired girl in various homes in the area.
On February 17, 1935, Henrietta was united in marriage to Bennard Schulz of Osmond, Nebraska, by Rev. W. P. Schroeder at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and to this union five children were born. Henrietta and Bennard farmed for many years and then worked as custodians at St. John Lutheran School and Church for seven years.
Henrietta was a long time member of St. John’s LWML. Her hobbies were gardening, a friendly game of cards, and crocheting. She made many afghans. When a new baby was added to the family, she had an afghan already made for it. In 1997 Henrietta sold her house in Charter Oak and moved to an apartment in Bennington, Nebraska, to be closer to her son and daughter.
Henrietta was preceded in death by her husband, Bennard; one infant son, Myron; one daughter, Marlys Van Pelt; one daughter-in-law, Irene Schulz; her parents; one sister, Adela Schultz and her husband, Elmer; two brothers, Martin Thies; and Herbert Thies and his wife, Marie; two brothers-in-law, Hugo Schulz; and Herman Schulz and his wife, Agatha; and two sisters-in-law, Minnie Gloe and her husband, Emil; and Meta Thomsen and her husband, John.
Henrietta is survived by son, Arlyn Schulz of New Ulm, Minnesota; son, Alan Schulz and his wife, Marilyn of Omaha, Nebraska; and daughter, Vonis Hartigan and her husband, David of Forest City, Iowa; one son-in-law, Dan Van Pelt of Bennington, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Schulz of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one sister-in-law, Juanita Thies of Aurora, Colorado; other relatives and friends.
