Irma Bornhoft

Irma Elenora Esther Bornhoft was born August 25, 1925, the daughter of Christoph and Elizabeth Schwartz Gierstorf. She passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 87.
Irma was born on the family farm in Morgan Township, Schleswig, Iowa. She was baptized September 20, 1925, and later confirmed on April 10, 1938, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hanover Township. She received her education at Morgan country school #8 and St. Paul Lutheran School in Hanover Township. Irma was united in marriage to Harold Bornhoft on February 1, 1948, at St. Paul Lutheran Church and to this union was born five children. The couple settled on the farm where Irma was born and raised.
Irma was a very social lady and loved to visit with her family and extended family whether in person or on the phone. She especially enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and attending their school events. Irma baked excellent cookies, breads, rolls, and bars and she and Harold prepared delicious meals together when the family came to visit. She was a good housekeeper and kept her kitchen neat and orderly. Irma planted a big garden every year and canned her produce. She had a green thumb and kept the same string of flowers going every year. In her spare time Irma sewed, quilted, cross-stitched, and embroidered. She liked to attend Barbershoppers shows when they were in the area. Irma was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold in 2006; one daughter, Patty Jean; two sisters, Pauline Meyer and her husband, John; and Leona Meyer and her husband, Herbert; four brothers: Reinhard Gierstorf and his wife, Mona; Wilbert Gierstorf; Elmer Gierstorf and his wife, Lorraine; and Delbert Gierstorf and his wife, Ramona. Survivors include four sons: Steven Bornhoft and his wife, Lee of Heron Lake, Minnesota; Randy Bornhoft and his wife, Mary of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois; Kevin Bornhoft and his wife, Sherri of Humboldt, Iowa; and Kent Bornhoft and his wife, Nan of Schleswig, Iowa; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Esther Gierstorf of Denison, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law: Lorraine Groth of Battle Creek, Iowa; and Marge Lantz of Ida Grove, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Roger Nissen of Carroll, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
