Vernon Kuhlmann

March 5, 1925 — September 21, 2013

Vernon Gustav Kuhlmann was born on March 5, 1925, the son of George J. and Rose Neddermeyer Kuhlmann. He died on September 21, 2013, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 88.
Vernon was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak and was baptized April 12, 1925, by Pastor Amstein and confirmed on March 17, 1940, by Pastor Schroeder. He received his education at St. John’s Lutheran School and the Charter Oak Community School.
On October 12, 1947, Vernon was united in marriage to Bernice Brodersen at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple made their home on the family farm three miles east of Charter Oak, farming there for 35 years. They were blessed with the birth of three children: Patricia, Janet and Barry. Vernon served on St. John’s church finance board and also four years on the Charter Oak town council.
Vernon was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his pride and joy. In 1981, Vernon and Bernice built and moved into their home in Charter Oak where they enjoyed a wonderful life. Following retirement from farming he and Bernice enjoyed attending many of their grandchildren’s activities and ball games. In his leisure time, he enjoyed bowling, playing cards with the neighbors, and keeping an immaculate yard. There was rarely a weed to be found.
Even after retirement he took great pride in his sweet corn patch, maintaining, picking and freezing corn with his family, not to mention sharing his bounty with many. Even the last couple of years, turning a deaf ear to the scoldings from the family, he was always right out there in the field with his bucket picking corn with the guys.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Edgar; and Kenneth and his wife, Dee; one sister, Darlene Marquardt and her husband, Edward; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Eldon and Muriel Brodersen and Vernon and Luverne Brodersen. Survivors include his wife of nearly 66 years, Bernice; his children: Pat Goetzinger and her husband, Jerry of Denison; Janet Fuhrmeister of Bennington, Nebraska; and Barry Kuhlmann and his wife, Terri of Good Thunder, Minnesota; also seven grandchildren: Jason Goetzinger, Amy Thornton, Erin Johnson, Eric Fuhrmeister, Michael Kuhlmann, Amanda Aliperto, and Jordyn Kuhlmann; six great-grandchildren: Madison, Macy, and Lane Thornton; Aynslee and Kaille Goetzinger, and Cohen Johnson; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Kuhlmann of Charter Oak; many nieces, nephews and friends. Vernon will be missed by many.
