Bonard Henry Christiansen was born on March 12, 1929, to Henry and Adeline (Wiese) Christiansen on a farm in Boyer, Iowa. He was baptized on February 18, 1944, at St. John Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township and later confirmed on March 25, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Bonard attended local country schools and graduated from Schleswig High School.
On May 21, 1950, Bonard was united in marriage to Beverly Bielenberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig. Shortly afterward, he enlisted in the United States Army. During his military service, the couple lived in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, and Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. Following his honorable discharge, they returned to Iowa and settled on a farm northeast of Schleswig for a year before moving to a farm east of town. There, they farmed for twenty years before relocating to Beverly’s century home farm, also east of Schleswig. Even in retirement, Bonard remained passionate about farming and enjoyed watching others plant and harvest.
Bonard was a dedicated member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Schleswig American Legion Post 645. He had a deep love for music and was a gifted singer, participating in many choirs and quartets throughout his life. He especially enjoyed singing with his wife, and together they performed at a variety of events. His musical talents extended to square dancing, where he served as a caller and instructor for more than 35 years. Outside of his musical and farming life, Bonard enjoyed spending time outdoors, tinkering, working on tractors, and tending to his garden. Above all, he cherished time with his family.
