Donald Steinkuehler

Donald Leroy Steinkuehler, also known as Little Don or Cakey, was born on November 16, 1954, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Donald and Evelyn (Soper) Steinkuehler. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Dow City and received his education in the Dow City-Arion Schools.

On May 17, 1974, Don was united in marriage with Debra Gehring at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. The couple was blessed with two sons, Kevin and Kraig. Kraig passed away in infancy. The family made their home in Denison. After a few years of marriage, they moved to Idaho for a year. During that time, Don was involved in a serious accident that left him disabled. Throughout his life, he worked in the hide cellar at Farmland Foods, as well as in road construction and drywall.

Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards, listening to music, watching western’s and playing video games. Most of all, he cherished the time he spent with his family.

Don passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 71 years, four months and 26 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Kraig Steinkuehler; brother, Mick Steinkueher; sister, Deb Schwiesow; and great-niece, Ally Chisholm.

He is survived by his wife of over 51 years, Debra Steinkuehler of Denison; son, Kevin D. Steinkuehler of Denison; many nieces and nephews; and other family members and friends.

His funeral service will be held at 4:00 on Friday, April 17, 2026, with visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Burial will follow in the Dow City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family. The family encourages everyone to dress casual, just as Don did.
