Donald was born on the family farm in Boyer Township, Crawford County, Iowa, the fourth born of eight living children. He graduated from Dow City High School in 1938. After high school, he went to Waterloo, Iowa, to work at Rath Packing Plant.
He was united in marriage to Mary Cleota “Tote” Brasel, the daughter of Elmer N. Brasel and Anne L. Brasel on May 24, 1941, at St. Patrick Catholic Church Rectory in Dunlap, Iowa. In 1957, they purchased their farm in Paradise Township and farmed there until retiring to Dow City in 1969.
Don enjoyed going to farm sales, visiting with family and friends and traveling to see the grandchildren. Don and Tote traveled to Florida for 33 winters.
