Doris Kahl

Doris Arlene Burmeister Kahl was born in Buck Grove, Iowa on July 25, 1925, the daughter of Emil Otto Burmeister and Helena “Lena” Hulsebus Burmeister and was raised on farms near Buck Grove. She attended rural schools in the area and graduated from Denison High School in 1943. Doris taught in a rural school before her marriage and continued her education through several colleges graduating from Dana College in Blair, Nebraska with the class of 1973 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. While earning her degree, she taught in the Dow City-Arion School system accumulating a total of 25 years when she retired in 1985.

As a child Doris attended Union Sunday school and St. John’s Lutheran Church both in Buck Grove. After receiving instructions, she was confirmed at St. John’s on August 23, 1942. She served her church in several capacities. She married Herman Vernon Kahl Jr. on April 8, 1945, at St. John’s and to this union 5 children were born: Kenneth, Pamela, Donald, Kathryn and Trent. After retirement, Doris became involved in several organizations serving terms in various positions. She also enjoyed traveling with bank groups to interesting destinations.

Doris passed away on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Gracewell Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 100 years and 22 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman Jr. in 1969; eldest son, Kenneth in 1998; siblings: Gladys, Leo and Helen.

Survivors include her children: Pam (Dennis) Jahn of Ute, Donald (Barb) Kahl of Dow City, Kathy (Bob) TenEyck of Dunlap and Trent Kahl of Gill, Colorado; daughters-in-law, Edith Kahl of Denison and Donna Kahl of Dow City; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Donna Ahart of Denison and Dorothy Kahl of Mason City; brother-in-law, Arlyn Schultz of Minnesota; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation with family greeting friends will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. with her funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. all on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment will follow in the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Memorials may be directed to the family.
