Dorothy Ann Dozler was born one minute before midnight on February 24, 1935, the daughter of Fred C. and Esther (Dethlefs) Nemitz, on her grandparents’ farm near Castana, Monona County, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Dorothy’s family later moved to Denison, where they made their home in an old schoolhouse. Growing up with eight siblings in that small home created many fond memories and lifelong bonds. She attended Zion Lutheran School and graduated from Denison High School with the Class of 1953.
One evening while roller-skating, Dorothy met the love of her life, Earl Dozler. The two were united in marriage on February 1, 1954, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. They were blessed with four children: Lynn, Kathy, Laura, and Gary, and made their home in Denison. Dorothy had dreamed of becoming a registered nurse, but her career path took a different turn. She began working at a bank, running debits and credits on a ledger machine. Later, she managed the Safeway flower shop, greenhouse, and sometimes the produce department. She continued when Hy-Vee took over. She eventually retired at the same time as Earl so they could enjoy life together.
Active in her community, Dorothy was a member of a local card club, phone club, and camping club, and she often volunteered at TAPP. When her children were young, she also served as their Girl Scout leader. After retiring, Dorothy and Earl purchased a camper and a small fishing boat and discovered a love for travel. They became snowbirds, spending winters down south, and enjoyed traveling with bank clubs, visiting Canada and all but three of the U.S. states. Dorothy was known for her “ten green thumbs” and her love of gardening. She and Earl took great pride in their flower and vegetable gardens, a shared passion that grew and flourished over the years. Above all, Dorothy cherished her family and treasured every moment spent making memories with them.
Dorothy passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 90 years, eight months and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl Dozler and two brothers: Fred and Robert Nemitz.
