Douglas Robert Rice was born on September 25, 1955, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Robert and Dorothy (Alberts) Rice. He grew up in Denison, where he attended school before beginning a lifelong pattern of working side by side with his father. In 1972, he joined him at Robo Car Wash, where the two worked together until the business was sold. Doug also shared 40 plus years working alongside his dad at Rice Trailer, something he took great pride in.
Doug enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially in the summer. He liked going to Yellow Smoke Park and to Lake View, where he could often be found riding his jet skis and taking in the atmosphere of lake life. He also loved collecting rocks and treasured family vacations to South Dakota, where many memories were made.
Doug passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 70 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Dorothy Rice; his daughter, April Rice; his sister, Linda Robinson; and his aunts and uncles, Marjorie and Arlin Otto and Norma and LaVerne Kiefer.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sister, Debbie (Larry) Smith of Greenview, Illinois; his granddaughter, Samantha (Orlando) Zamago of Denison; five great-grandchildren; his dearest friend, Kathy Dressen of Denison; his brother-in-law, Jim Robinson of Carlisle; his uncles: Dick (Monica) Rice of Storm Lake, Ed (Loa Jean) Rice of Alta, and Tom (Doris) Rice of Storm Lake; along with his niece, nephews, and numerous cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Boulders Conference Center. Memorials in Doug’s honor may be made to the Denison City Pound or to a charity of your choice.
