Edna Schroeder

Edna Margaret Schroeder was born March 23, 1925, at home on a farm in Washington Township, near Manilla, Iowa, to Frank and Anna Stoltz Roecker. She passed away Thursday, February 3, 2011, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-five.
Edna was baptized at St. Peter and Pauls Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. She received First Holy Communion and Confirmation at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla, Iowa. She received her elementary education in rural schools in Washington and Nishnabotna Townships in Crawford County. She attended Manilla High School, graduating with the class of 1942. After graduation she worked in several homes and then in businesses in Manning.
During the summer of 1944 she attended Buena Vista College Branch summer school in Atlantic, Iowa, received a teaching certificate, and then taught for two years in Iowa Township, Crawford County. After she married, she taught one semester in Carroll County.
On May 21, 1946, she was united in marriage to Harold Jay Schroeder of Westside, Iowa, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manilla. The couple made their home on a farm in Hayes Township and were blessed with the birth of four daughters. In March 1962 they moved to a farm in Jackson Township and then in March 1966 they quit farming and moved into their new home in Westside, Iowa. Edna operated the East End Caf there for one year and then worked at J.C. Penney in Carroll, Iowa, for a short time. In July 1968 she became the receptionist at the Carroll Daily Times Herald Newspaper, where she remained until retiring in January 1993.
She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of St. Anns Catholic Church in Vail, Iowa, from 1946 until 2004, St. Anns Altar Society, Westside Legion Auxiliary, Westside Cemetery Association, a 4-H leader, and president of Westside Senior Citizens from 1994-2004. She was a member of Busy Thimble Quilters and was an accomplished seamstress. After moving to the Oakwood Apartments in August 2004, she joined St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Harold on November 20, 2000; her mother in 1928; her father in 1969; four brothers: Donald; Norbert; Marvin; and Roland Roecker and his wife, Theda; her stepmother, Lavina Roecker in 2006; her father and mother-in-law, Harry and Elsie Schroeder; and one brother-in-law, Elden Schroeder. Survivors include daughters: Sharon Schroeder, Margaret Keating of St. Paul, Minnesota; Diane Janning, Dennis of Carroll; Jeri Coleman, Joe of Denison; and Kim Nobiling of Des Moines, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Natalie, Christian Williams; Melissa, Phillip Keys, Jodi, Ben Einck , and Tim Coleman; and Jamie, Jason, and Jeremy Nobiling; two great-grandchildren, Aislinn Williams and John Einck; dear friend, Virgil Boeck and his family of Denison; two sisters: Norma Rowedder, Ivan of Schleswig; Charla Knapp, Munn of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; one brother, Kenneth Roecker of Denison; four sisters-in-law: Joyce Roecker of Manning; Linda Roecker of Story City, Iowa; Diane Roecker of Des Moines; and Ruth Schroeder of Minneapolis, Minnesota; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
