Ervin William Lutz was born on December 31, 1937, the son of Paul and Hulda (Hantelman) Lutz in Denison Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed his faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Ervin received his education from Denison High School. He enlisted into the Iowa Army National Guard in May of 1960 and served until his honorable discharge in May 1966.
On October 6, 1963, Ervin was united in marriage to Barbara Hocamp near Adair. They made their home on a farm north of Denison and were blessed with three children: Lori, Mark, and Daniel. Ervin began his working career at Iowa Beef Processors, where he worked in the icehouse. However, his true passion was farming. He began farming alongside his brother Louie, and together they formed “Lutz Brothers”. Later, Ervin branched out on his own, purchasing a corn sheller and providing custom corn shelling services to many area farmers for several years. In addition to crop farming, he also raised livestock.
A lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Ervin was also active in the Crawford County Pork Producers. He had a fondness for old cars and tractors and enjoyed frequent trips to the casino and Las Vegas with close friends. He was a member of a card club and rarely missed listening to the KDSN Polka Party. He loved polka music and dancing, and watching game shows was one of his favorite daily pastimes. A special memory for Ervin was traveling to Germany to meet his new grandchild. Above all, he treasured the time spent with his family and took great pride in supporting his grandchildren at their many activities and events.
Ervin passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Gracewell, An Eventide Community in Denison at the age of 87 years, five months and four days. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barb Lutz; brothers: Clarence (KIA in WWII), Arthur, Alfred, Donald, Marion “Louie” and Vernon Lutz.
He is survived by his children: Lori (Joe) Houston of Clinton, Nebraska, Mark (Renee) Lutz of Denison and Daniel (Bobbi) Lutz of Schleswig; five grandchildren: Vanessa Houston, April (Max) Schneider, Delaney (Ryan) Branning, Brady Lutz and Haley Lutz; three great-grandchildren: Duncan, Nora and Ava Schneider; nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends.
