Jay Alan Fink was born on August 9, 1979, in Denison, Iowa, the son of Joel and Cathy (Bengford) Fink. He was baptized on September 23, 1979, and later confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. Jay attended Denison High School, graduating with the class of 1997, and went on to Vatterott College, where he earned a degree in Computer Aided Drafting.
On September 12, 2009, Jay was united in marriage to Trisha Johannsen, and they were blessed with two daughters, Avery and Sydney. The couple later parted ways. Jay worked in Des Moines at Wells Fargo until the passing of his father, at which time he returned to Denison. There, he began working as a landscaper, both independently and with Phil’s Lawn and Landscaping. He had a natural eye for design, able to envision his projects from start to finish, and took great pride in transforming spaces through his work.
Jay had a love for playing Euchre and was known for his competitive spirit—so much so that his family would sometimes let him win just to keep the fun going. He enjoyed watching all sports and was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan, with an impressive memory for players and their college careers. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball and later spent time playing kickball with family at gatherings. Above all, Jay cherished his daughters; they were the center of his world. He loved watching them dance, making bracelets with them, playing games, going to the swimming pool, and fully embracing the joys of being a girl dad. He also let them paint his fingernails and toenails and wore it proudly wherever he went.
Jay faced a long and difficult battle with addiction and passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the Denison Care Center at the age of 46 years, seven months and ten days. He was preceded in death by his father, Joel Fink; maternal grandparents, Ray and Shirley Bengford of Deloit; and paternal grandfather, Mervin Fink.
He is survived by his daughters: Avery Fink and Sydney Fink both of Treynor; mother, Cathy Fink of Denison; siblings: Jennifer Fink of West Des Moines, Matt (Trisha) Fink of Denison and Nick (Emily) Fink of Deloit; grandmother, Lorena Fink of Fort Collins, Colorado; nieces: Kambrie (Conner) Reimer of Schleswig, Kierah (Emigdio) Gutierrez of Des Moines and Brinley Fink of Denison; nephews: Grant Fink and Harrison Fink both of Denison and Raymond Fink and Jaxon Fink both of Deloit; great-niece, Kaylen Reimer; many aunts and uncles; many cousins; and other family and friends.
Visitation with family greeting friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Our Savior Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Deloit Cemetery. The family will direct memorials.
