Joseph Darwin Yirkovsky was born on March 7, 1949, the son of James and Bernadette (Steffes) Yirkovsky, at the family home in Calmar, Iowa. Following his birth, the doctor actually placed him in the oven to keep him warm. He was baptized into the Catholic faith and received his education in Marion, Iowa.

On June 13, 1970, Joe married Connie Thompson. The couple was blessed with one daughter and two sons. The family made their home in Odebolt and Denison before ultimately settling in the quiet town of Schleswig. Joe worked at Farmland Foods in Denison throughout his career until his retirement, making many friends along the way.
While living in Odebolt, Joe spent many years serving with the Volunteer Fire Department, where he greatly enjoyed the camaraderie and time spent with others. He loved spending time on the golf course and watching Westerns on television. Above all, Joe cherished the time he spent with his family.
