Leo Joseph Remmes was born January 10, 1930, at Charter Oak, Iowa, the son of Bernard and Verna Remmes. He passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-eight.
Leo received his education in the Charter Oak schools and graduated from Charter Oak High School with the class of 1947. He was inducted into the United States Army September 11, 1951, and served his country in Korea during the Korean Conflict, as a tech sergeant in the 2nd Rocket FaBtry . He was honorably discharged June 10, 1953, and was awarded a Korean Service Medal with two bronze service stars, United Nations Service Medal and District Unit Emblem.
On June 18, 1953, Leo was united in marriage to Ruth Gaughan at Denison, Iowa. His employment career began at the Farmers State Bank in Charter Oak and he continued his banking career for 32 years at the Crawford County Trust & Savings Bank in Denison, where he served as vice president and director until 1986 when he retired. In 1988, he was elected Crawford County Auditor and served in that capacity until he retired again January 1, 1996.
Golfing, bowling on a Monday night league and coaching Little League were his favorite leisure time activities. He also enjoyed spending time at Lake View and boating on the lake. Leo was very civic minded and was involved with many civic activities and organizations, including the VFW and American Legion.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John, Jim, Bill and Tom and one sister, Marilyn. Survivors include: his wife, Ruth; four sons, Jim; Michael and his wife, Sandi and their children David, Rebecca, and John; Robert and his wife, Mary and their children Sarah, Elizabeth, and Rachel; and Mark and his wife, Tracy and their children Jacob and Nicholas; two brothers, Fr. Richard and Joe; three sisters, Jean, Cathy and Helen; three sisters-in-law, Colleen, Geri and Marian, other relatives and friends.
