Loretta Anderson

April 12, 1936 — August 27, 2025

Loretta Lena Anderson was born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1936, in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Viola (Boeck) Hoffmeier. She was baptized and later confirmed her faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, where she remained a lifelong member. Loretta grew up on the family farm south of Denison and attended school in Denison.

On March 22, 1953, Loretta was united in marriage to Harold Wulf at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Six children were born to this union: Russell, Dale, Connie, David, Kenneth, and Robert. Together, Loretta and Harold owned and operated the Broadway Inn on Main Street for 11 years. After selling the business, Loretta worked as an aide at Eventide before beginning a long career in sales at Sleepwalk Gallery, where she worked for more than 20 years until her retirement in 2011.

In 1977, Loretta was united in marriage to John Anderson.

Family was at the heart of Loretta’s life. She cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who lovingly called her “Grandma Great” rather than “Great Grandma.” She was a kind and gentle soul who never judged others, treating everyone with equal respect.

Loretta enjoyed many simple pleasures. She loved gardening, baking her famous chocolate chip cookies, sewing, canning, and freezing food. Raising six children, she became an excellent cook. She enjoyed reading, especially Our Iowa Magazine, and spending time outdoors in the sunshine. A farm girl at heart, she loved the outdoors, and she found special joy in watching hummingbirds.

Loretta passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, at Gracewell, having attained the age of 89 years, 4 months, and 15 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harold Wulf and John Anderson; her children: David Wulf and Connie Swift; siblings: Melvin (Ruth) Hoffmeier, Harry (Clara) Hoffmeier and Annette (Harvey) Vetter.

She is survived by her children: Russell (Mary) Wulf, Dale (Kathy) Wulf, son-in-law, Gaylin Swift, Kenneth (Laura) Wulf and Robert (Sandy) Wulf; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; special friend and roommate, Opal; and other family and friends. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Gracewell Nursing Home for the care given to Loretta.
