Marilyn Jean Nemitz was born on December 16, 1941, the daughter of Eddie and Lydia (Maack) Eggert in Denison, Iowa. She was baptized and later confirmed her faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Marilyn received her education from Denison High School and graduated with the class of 1959.
On June 21, 1959, Marilyn was united in marriage to James Nemitz at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, officiated by Rev. Schmidt. The couple began their life together on a farm south of Ricketts, before moving in 1968 to a farm near Denison. Marilyn was devoted to her role as a homemaker, caring for her family while also helping on the farm. She was known for butchering hundreds of chickens each year.
Later in life, Marilyn worked at Eventide in the laundry department, then at the Denison Care Center, and most recently at the Senior Center, where she dedicated over 17 years before retiring shortly before her passing.
Marilyn was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and St. Paul Lutheran Church near Ricketts. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Euchre, Shove It and Nertz, with friends and family. For many years, she participated in league bowling. She took great pride in tending a large, well-nourished garden and spent many seasons canning her produce. Above all, Marilyn cherished time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and found great joy in supporting them in their many activities and events.
Marilyn passed away on Thursday, March 26, 2026, at the age of 84 years, three months and ten days. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Jim Nemitz.
Marilyn is survived by her two daughters, Janine (Brian) Whited of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Janelle (Joel) Johnson of Denison; son, Jim (Emalee) Nemitz of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren: Kristin (Brad) Boyd, Alex (Terra) Whited, Jennifer (Alan) White, Jeremy (Rachel) McMinemee, Jakob Nemitz, Joshua (Emily) Nemitz and Hannah (Matt) Casey; great-grandchildren: Cora, Cole, Maya, Lydia, Brady, Solomon and Oliver; special friends, Bobbie and Flip Garcia; and many other family members and friends.
Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., with visitation held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Monday, March 30, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Interment will follow in Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. The family will direct memorials.
