Marilyn Jean Pirwitz was born on July 27, 1931, the daughter of William and Louise (Wulf) Groth near Denison, Iowa. She was baptized in Christ and later confirmed her faith on April 25, 1946, at the Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church in Schleswig. She received her education in a rural country school, Goodrich Number 3, near her home. After graduating from the eighth grade, she remained at home to help her parents, as well as worked as a hired girl in various homes in the area.
Marilyn was united in marriage to Darlo Pirwitz at Friedens Evangelical Reformed Church in Schleswig on June 1, 1958. The couple settled on the family farm, and they were blessed with one son, Dennis and twin daughters: Karen and Kay. She kept busy as a homemaker on the farm, raising chickens and ducks. Marilyn loved to cook meals and baked goodies for the family.
Marilyn was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. Marilyn loved to be with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening and dancing to polkas and waltzes with her family and friends. After Darlo passed away in July of 2005, she started working as a custodian at St. John Lutheran Church and school in Charter Oak and continued to do so for 10 years. She also spent time working with the altar, newsletters, and ladies’ aid.
Marilyn passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2023, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of 92 years, one month and 14 days.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Darlo Pirwitz; son, Dennis Pirwitz; three brothers: Wilbert (Donna) Groth, Milroy Groth and Vertus Groth; two sisters: Darlene (Arlo) Jensen and Irene (Herman) Meiners; and brothers-in-law, Paul Meeves and Gene Schneider. She is survived by her twin daughters: Karen (Eugene) Mohr of Vail and Kay (Carl) Domsch of Wakefield, Nebraska; grandchildren: Justin (Sara) Mohr, Ryan (Emily) Mohr, Maritza (Ryan) Slaughter, and Rosina Pirwitz (Brian Huynh); step-grandchildren: Oscar (Toccara) Loya of Bellevue, Nebraska; great-grandchildren: Hayden and Kaison Slaughter and Callahan Mohr; step-great-grandchildren: Dohnaven, Rosaria, and Maxwell Loya; sisters: Betty Meeves of Dunlap and Margaret (Ervin) Moeller of Denison; three sisters-in-law: Lorraine Groth of Denison, Marlys Groth of Denison, and Marlene (Groth) Schneider of Denison; family friend, Bonita Jepsen of Charter Oak; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation with the family greeting friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak. Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Interment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery near Charter Oak. Memorials may be directed to the family.
