Marlene Ann Malone, more affectionately known as “Tootie” or “Fruit” age 88, of Dow City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, at Homestead Assisted Living, just twelve days after the passing of her beloved husband, Gene.
Born on October 29, 1936, near Charter Oak, Iowa, Marlene was the daughter of Bernhard “Ben” and Alinda (Kelm) Hagemann. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, a foundation that guided her life. A graduate of Charter Oak Community High School, Marlene went on to build a life rooted in faith, family, and hard work.
On February 14, 1960, Marlene was united in marriage to Eugene Malone at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. In 1962, they fulfilled their shared dream of owning a farm, settling north of Dow City, where they spent their lives together until moving to Homestead Assisted Living 2023.
Marlene dedicated over 25 years as a homemaker, supporting the rhythm and resilience of farm life. She found joy in her garden, ceramics, crocheting, and exploring her family’s genealogy. Marlene was an animal lover. She was a devoted member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City and an active participant in the Ladies Auxiliary, where she found purpose, fellowship, and joy in serving her community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene Malone; and her siblings, Walter "Bud" Hagemann, Donald Hagemann, and Phyllis TenEyck.
Marlene is lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Known for her headstrong spirit, outspoken wit, caring heart, and lighthearted sense of humor, Marlene brought warmth and honesty into every room she entered. Fiercely loyal and dedicated to those she loved; her presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Her visitation and memorial service are pending.
