Maurine C. Englehardt

October 25, 1921 — March 10, 2024

Omaha, Formerly of Westside

Maurine Clare Englehardt was born on October 25, 1921 in Westside, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Elva (Lohrmann) Massman. She attended Westside High school, graduated with the Class of 1938 and continued her studies at Van Sant Business School in Omaha.

She married her first husband in1939 and welcomed her son Lonny Bartels in 1940. During World War II, she traveled alone to Washington D.C. to work for the government where she met August “Gus” Englehardt. She moved to San Francisco Bay Area after the war to be near Gus and his family. They were married August 16,1946, and had two daughters, Paulette and Kristi.

Maurine enjoyed working as a stenographer and typist in Washington D.C. and in California before Paulette was born, and again once Kristi was in high school. She developed an interest in finance and the stock market. She loved music and danced to big band music with Gus throughout their many decades together.

Maurine and Gus traveled a lot in the US and moved many times. In 1957 Gus took one year assignment with the phone company in New York. The family moved to New Jersey, and traveled throughout the East Coast. They returned to the Bay Area, driving across country. Every other summer they traveled to Iowa to spend time with family, often taking a different route to see a new part of the United States, eventually visiting all 50 States. In 1976 when Gus and Maurine were retired, they moved back to Westside to be closer to Maurine’s family. They moved to Omaha a few years later where they spent their remaining years.

Maurine loved her family. As their traveling diminished, she enjoyed visits from children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her brother Verle’s family. Maurine passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Brookestone Village in Omaha, Nebraska, attaining the age of 102 years, 4 months, and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, August Englehardt; son, Lonny Bartels; son-in-law, Arnold Luetje; and sister-in-law, DonnaBelle Massman.

She is survived by her two daughters: Paulette Luetje of Omaha, NE, and Kristi (Gerhard) Epke of San Anselmo, CA; daughter-in-law Janet Bartels of Urbandale, IA; five grandchildren: Patricia (Rob) Atkinson of Salt Lake City, UT, Janette (Skip) Frey of Swisher, IA, Brett Bartels of Urbandale, IA, Gerhard (Larkin) Epke of San Anselmo, CA and Johanna Epke of Brookline, MA; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; brother Verle Massman of Denison; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
