Michael Duane Mordhorst was born on August 5, 1957 in Denison, Iowa, the son of Duane and Joyce (Petersen) Mordhorst. He was baptized on August 18, 1957 and later confirmed his faith on April 4, 1971 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute. He received his education from Charter Oak - Ute Community School and graduated with the Class of 1975. Following graduation, he attended Western Iowa Tech Community College for carpentry.

Michael started working for Morton Building, Inc. in Onawa. He took up farming full-time with his father and purchased an acreage outside of Ute raising livestock and crops. Through the years, Michael has had several family and friends help on the farm. He was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ute and had a strong faith in his Lord.

Michael was an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed going fishing and hunting with his family and friends. He ran Willow Creek Pheasant Preserve for several years where he met many people who also enjoyed hunting and shooting clays as much as he did.
