Joseph Michael Clarey, more affectionally known by Mike, was born on December 5, 1935, the son on Thomas and Frieda (Cassebarth) Clarey in Denison, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith. Mike completed his education at Denison High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. He enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard, serving until his honorable discharge. Mike began his career with the railroad and later worked for various companies in Omaha.

On September 8, 1962, he was united in marriage to Patricia Hansen in Denison. They made their home in the Council Bluffs and Omaha area for 35 years before returning to Denison. Mike attended Omaha University for a couple of years and built a career as a Registered Land Surveyor and Engineering Technician, working for both the City of Council Bluffs and the Pottawattamie County Engineer’s Office. He was a talented and passionate artist and enjoyed photography.

Mike passed away on Monday, May 5, 2025, at his home in Denison at the age of 89 years and five months. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia (Francis) Murtaugh; and brother, John “Jack” Clarey.

Mike is survived by his wife, Patricia Clarey of Denison; siblings-in-law: Dr. Lois Godiksen of Washington D.C., Karen McPartland of Council Bluffs, Dr. James (Anniek) Hansen of New York City, New York and Lloyd Hansen of Denison; close nephews: Sam Hansen and Dan Murtaugh; many other nephews and nieces; the Vincente Sandoval Family; and other family members and friends.

Mike’s wishes were to be cremated and the family will hold a Celebration of Life on their own at a later date. We will update the date, time and location here after the family chooses.
