Nellie “Tudy” Bretey was born on September 19, 1940, in Annapolis, Maryland to Vincent E. Sr. and Gladys (Barnes) Lukowiak. She attended school in Casper, Wyoming and graduated with the Class of 1958.
Tudy was the beloved wife of Dale Bretey. The couple was united in marriage on November 21, 1959, in Casper. Together they built not only a family, but also a life rooted in hard work through their agricultural farming operation. Tudy was a supportive partner in every sense—standing beside her husband through the challenges and rewards of farm life until his passing at the age of 50.
Tudy lived a life defined by faith, devotion to family, and quiet strength. A humble and selfless mother, she was known for her warm spirit, steady encouragement, and the deep love she gave so freely to those around her.
Her faith in God was the cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of the Catholic Church, Tudy lived her beliefs through kindness, generosity, and a quiet example of service. She served in several leadership positions in Council of Catholic Women (CCW) and local pro-life activities. She found strength in prayer and community, and her faith guided the way she cared for her family and friends.
Tudy raised six children who grew into compassionate and well-balanced adults—one of the accomplishments she was most proud of. She was a loving grandmother whose grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her immense joy. Her home and heart were always open, and she had a way of making everyone feel welcome and valued.
Known for her generally upbeat nature, Tudy was a friend to many. Her gentle humility, steady faith, and loving presence left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Tudy exuded a zest for life. She enjoyed good humor, horse-back riding, gardening, cooking, and many other interests. She appreciated the simple and beautiful things in life, as exemplified by her request for a handmade casket built by Trappist monks.
She will be remembered most for the love she gave, the faith she lived, and the family she nurtured.
Tudy passed away on March 15, 2026, at Elk Ridge Village in Elkhorn, NE having attained the age of 85 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vincent Sr. and Glady Lukowiak; her husband, Dale, in 1988; her brother, Vincent Lukowiak Jr.; daughter-in-law, Nora Bretey; son-in-law, Tony Blackman; sister-in-law, Toni Lukowiak; and brother-in-law, Rick Phillips.
Survivors include her six children: Clayton (Marian) Bretey, Kurtis (Shelly) Bretey, Keith (Teri) Bretey, Paulette (Todd) Karolczak, Becky Blackman, and Tony (Nicole) Bretey; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Stella “Suky” McMasters, Dan Lukowiak, Mary Phillips, Dave (Lori) Lukowiak, and Joe Lukowiak; sister-in-law, Beverly Lukowiak; and many extended family members and friends.
