Richard Carl Meyer, 91, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, held close by family who loved him.
A lifelong son of Denison, Richard was born on June 30, 1934, to Carl and Nellie (Ackelbein) Meyer. Richard was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and belonged to and supported the Zion Lutheran Church of Denison.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia Bachmann of Denison; daughters, Cindy (Mark) Mathies of Denison, Carla (Brenda Martin) Meyer of Litchfield Park, Arizona, and Simone (Carolina Solis) Dubois of Concord, California; sister, Annie (Bob) Kroll; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; much-loved in-laws; neighbors; and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffery Meyer; and siblings: Sheila Jescke, Karen Bretey, and John Meyer.
Richard served in the United States Army from November of 1954 until September of 1956. He served in Korea and attained the specialty and title of Supply Sergeant. His Army service grounded his life in the values of duty, steadiness, and compassion. He enjoyed a full career working for the Iowa Department of Transportation as a surveyor and ultimately as a road construction inspector.
His deepest passion was the natural world. He was a founding member of the Crawford County Fish and Wildlife Club, which later became the Crawford County Conservation Board. He served several terms on that board and, along with the other board members of the time, was instrumental in establishing Crawford County’s Yellow Smoke Park. On his own farm, he set aside land for native animals and plants. The land blooms with food for bees, butterflies, and the quiet essential life of a prairie.
Richard will be remembered for the way he cared for his land, community, and the people he met throughout his life. His legacy endures in the places he protected, the steadiness he offered, and the love he carried into every chapter of his life.
Visitation with family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.
