Ruth Remmes

June 23, 1929 — July 27, 2026

Ruth Ann Remmes was born on June 23, 1929, in Dunlap, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Anna (McKane) Gaughan. She was baptized and later confirmed in the Catholic faith. Ruth attended St. Rose Catholic School through the eighth grade before graduating from Denison High School with the Class of 1947. Following her education, she began working as the bookkeeper for her father's business, Gaughan Motors, where she dedicated an incredible 56 years of service.

On June 18, 1953, Ruth was united in marriage to Leo Remmes at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Together they built a loving home in Denison and were blessed with four sons.

A lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Ruth was active in the Ladies Guild and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling and golfing in her younger years. One of her favorite bowling memories was when she and a teammate were both expecting babies, prompting the opposing team to jokingly tease that they had "two extra players" on their team, a story that always brought a smile and a laugh.

Family was at the center of Ruth's life. She treasured spending summers at her parents' cabin in Lake View, where many cherished memories were made. Eventually, she and Leo purchased their own cabin there, creating a special place for their children to enjoy as they grew up. Ruth also found joy in tending to the flower gardens around her home. After retiring, she and Leo spent ten wonderful winters in Texas, making many happy memories together.

Above all, Ruth cherished time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also fulfilled a lifelong dream in 2025, when she was honored as the Irish Mother by the St. Patrick's Day Irish Committee in Denison, a recognition that brought her great pride and joy.

Ruth passed away on Monday, July 27, 2026, at Gracewell in Denison at the age of 97 years, one month and four days. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo Remmes; grandson-in-law, Alex Klinner.

She is survived by her four sons: Jim Remmes of Denison, Michael (Sandi) Remmes of Normal, Illinois, Robert (Mary) Remmes of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Mark (Tracy) Remmes of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; grandchildren: David Remmes, Rebecca Remmes (Amos Davis), John Remmes, Sarah (James) Harrill, Elizabeth Klinner, Rachel (Brock) Meeker, Jacob Remmes and Nicholas Remmes; great-grandchildren: Anneliese, Margaret, Leo, Noah and Grace; brother, James (Sharon) Gaughan; in-laws; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
