Valera Emma Edna Stern

Valera Emma Edna (Stender) Stern was born October 13, 1921 in Morgan Township, the daughter of Theodore and Hilda (Kuehl) Stender. She was baptized and confirmed at Frieden's Evangelical Church in Schleswig, Iowa.

On March 17, 1950, Valera was united in marriage to James Stern. To this union, they were blessed with two children: Janice Elise in 1951 and Kim James in 1952. They made their home in Schleswig, Iowa.

Over the years, Valera worked in the clothing, hardware, grocery, and drug stores in Schleswig. She was a member of United Church of Christ, the Women's Guild, and Schleswig VFW Auxiliary for many years. Valera had a strong faith and cherished her family more than anything.

Valera passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Windmill Manor in Coralville, Iowa, attaining the age of 101 years, 4 months, and 4 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, James Stern in 1992.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Stern of Iowa City; son, Kim Stern and his wife Georgia of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two grandchildren: Erika and her husband Jason Reisdorfer and their daughters: Rayna and Mallory Reisdorfer of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Alexa and her husband Martin Maud and their daughter, Morgan Maud of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; other relatives and friends.

Private Graveside Service will be on Monday, February 20, 2023 in the Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig. Memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ in Schleswig.
