Wilbur was baptized in Christ March 27, 1927 and confirmed his faith March 17, 1940, both at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, where he was a lifelong member. He received his education at Zion Lutheran School and one year at Denison High School, then began his farming career with his father. Wilbur was drafted into the United States Army September 13, 1950, and served his country during the Korean War in Company K of the 16th Infantry Regiment. He received his honorable discharge as a corporal on September 9, 1952.
On November 16, 1952, Wilbur was united in marriage to Evelyn Carstensen. The couple made their home on the family farm in Goodrich Township and was blessed with the birth of five children. In his younger years, Wilbur worked at various jobs. However, his heart remained in agriculture, tending the land and raising livestock. He also owned and operated Reimers and Sons Trucking. He witnessed the many changes in the industry from farming with mules and horses to autonomous tractors.
Wilbur enjoyed socializing, having morning coffee and in the evening, joining the Widowers Club for a meal. He particularly liked discussing history with people and looking at the crops.
