Dorris Pauline Ruhl was born on August 29th of 1920 in Enid, Oklahoma, to Oron and Estie Ruhl. In 1925 the family moved to Webster City, Iowa, where they lived on a farm. She was one of eight children in the family. Doris went to school and graduated from the Webster City High School.
Following graduation, Dorris was employed in a womens apparel store in Fort Dodge. She married Ralph Borcherding on September 21, 1941, in a double wedding ceremony with close friends in Lancaster, Missouri. Soon afterward, Ralph enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After completion of his basic training in Chicago in 1942, Dorris and Ralph moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where Dorris worked as a bookkeeper for a construction company.
In 1943 they moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where Ralph was stationed and Dorris was employed as a bookkeeper at the Naval Hospital. A son, Ralph C. Borcherding (Bud), was born in November of 1944. They remained there until 1945 when they moved to Hampton, Iowa, where both Dorris and Ralph worked at the Graham Department Store. A daughter, Judy, was born on November 8th of 1946.
In 1947 they moved to Belmond, Iowa. Then in 1949 they moved to Adel, Iowa, to run a Woodwards Department Store. In 1955, the family moved to Sac City, Iowa, to run a mens department store. Dorris was mainly a homemaker there.
In 1961 the family moved to Denison, Iowa, where Ralph opened the C.R. Anthony Department Store with Dorris as a sales clerk. In 1977 Dorris and her daughter, Judy, opened a womens apparel store called The Vault. Dorris retired in 1991 when the store closed.
Dorris was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on various committees. Her hobbies and interests included playing bridge, sewing, crocheting, golfing, dancing, cooking and baking, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Dorris was a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home since March of 2010. She died Monday, August 16, 2010, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Pearl Ruhl, Archie Ruhl, Vernie Ruhl and Richard Ruhl; three sisters: Marie Schweppe, Opal Watson and Evelyn McKee. Her survivors include: husband, Ralph; one son, Ralph (Bud) and his wife, Vicki; one daughter, Judy and her husband, Terry; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Diana and Esther; a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 20, 2010, at First United Methodist Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Alberta Ervin officiated the service and graveside rites at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Organist Nancy Miles provided accompaniment for congregational hymn, "How Great Thou Art" and for "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagles Wings" by soloist Sue Rosener. Honorary pallbearers were George and Shirley Berry, John and Elsie Cookson, Robert and Alma Glau, Stephen and Beth Sunquist, Maclyn and Jan LaRue, Scott Borcherding, Brent Meadows, Alyssa Evers and Devin Evers. Serving as pallbearers were Burton Tekippe Jr., Marcus Rihner, Ron Surber, Tom Rosauer Jr., Larry Struck and Jim Sharp. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
