Irene Helen Jepsen was born December 6, 1919, the daughter of Alfred and Elise Jaacks Meggers. She died Friday, June 4, 2010, at Crawford County Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety.
Irene was born in Denison where she grew up and attended school. She was baptized in Christ at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed on April 14, 1935. On December 15, 1942, Irene was united in marriage to Fred Jepsen at the Zion Lutheran Parsonage in Denison by C.W. Schmidt.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend who devoted her life to her family. She enjoyed a variety of activities including sewing, embroidery, canning, cooking, baking, doing crossword puzzles, word search, playing cards and writing letters. She always included lengthy handwritten letters in all her Christmas cards. She also worked on journals and diaries. She was involved in various card clubs where she enjoyed socializing with friends. She was a member of the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary. Irene had a strong faith and was devoted to her Lord and Savior as a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, where she taught Sunday school for 17 years, and then later at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa, after they moved there in 1980. Irene and Fred also were members of Zions Wedding Ring Club.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; one daughter, Beverly; one son, Curtis, in infancy; four brothers: Emil, Leonard, Marvin and Edward Meggers; and three sisters: Edna Igou, Esther Namanny and Minnie Frank. She is survived by four daughters: Karen Wood and her husband, Vern of Schleswig; Betty Kluver and her husband, Jim of Sioux City, Iowa; Marlene Bachman and her husband, Fred of Schleswig; Pat Bilsten and her husband, Mark of Denison; four sons: Richard Jepsen and Ruth Burk of Denison; Lonny Jepsen and his wife, Tracey of Early, Iowa; Gaylen Jepsen and his wife, Jayne of Denison; David Jepsen and his wife, Lisa of Kiron; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Magdalene Christiansen of Denison; four brothers-in-law: Herman Jepsen; Vernon Jepsen and his wife, Diane, all of Ricketts; Victor Jepsen of Battle Creek; Ed Jepsen and his wife Marilyn of Denison; other relatives and friends.
