August Englehardt was born in Petaluma, California, on July 29, 1914, the son of August and Irene Englehardt. He died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Montclair Nursing & Rehab Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of ninety-five.
August graduated from Analy High School in Petaluma. Later he moved to Oakland and did carpentry work, however, he was always interested in electronics. He joined the Navy in December of 1942, and served until the end of World War II. He studied Naval electronics at MIT. He was aboard the U.S.S. Laffey most of the 3 years of service participating in the D-Day invasion of Normandy in June 1944, then on to the Pacific and had Radar Picket duty off Okinawa on April 16, 1945, when the ship was hit five times by suicide planes.
On August 16, 1946, August was married to Maurine Massman Bartels. In June 1955, August was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, California. He worked for the Pacific Telephone Company for 28 years in San Francisco, California. After retiring he moved to the Midwest to be near Maurines family.
August is survived by his wife, Maurine; two daughters: Paulette and her husband, Arnold; Kristi and her husband, Gerhard; one stepson, Lonny and his wife, Janet; one brother-in-law, Verle and his wife, Donnabelle; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
