Edith Olive Gruhn was born November 16, 1916, the daughter of William and Agnes Shaw Miller. She died Monday, January 25, 2010, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of ninety-three.
Edith was born in Spokane, Washington. She attended school in Manilla, Iowa, and graduated from Manilla High School. Her father traveled a lot so she lived throughout many states in the United States. She received Normal Training after school and then taught in rural schools until her children were born. On June 5, 1943, she was united in marriage to Laverne Gruhn in Manilla and the couple made their home in Manilla. They were blessed with the birth of three sons, Wayne, Stan and Bill.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother who cared for her family with great diligence. She taught them the importance of honesty, integrity and a good work ethic. She enjoyed socializing with her family and friends, especially over a slice of pie. Others knew her as a kind lady who loved her home and enjoyed cooking, gardening and shopping. She also had a great love for pets and all of Gods creatures, as she used to refer to them. She was very active in the Eastern Star and other church and charitable organizations, such as the American Heart Association, Rainbow Girls, Hospital Auxiliary, Christian Womens Club. She was a proud, conservative Republican. She also taught Sunday school, helped with Christmas pageants, was a Cub Scout leader and was involved in any and all activities in which her boys were involved, giving total support to them. Edith was always willing to help others and always had a smile on her face and kind words to say.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Laverne. Survivors include her sons: Dr. Stan Gruhn and his wife, MaryLynn of Wisconsin; Bill Gruhn and his wife, Holly of Denison; two grandchildren: Jennifer Lodgerman and her husband, Rob of Wisconsin; Dr. Hugh Gruhn and his wife, Carolyn of Washington; five great-grandchildren: Oliver, Juliann, Grey, Matthew and Margeaux; other relatives and friends.
